Hammam: the essence of heat, water, and cleansing

What a hammam does and why it is so much more than just cleansing

The hammam is an ancient ritual of heat, water, and cleansing known for its deeply relaxing effect on the body and skin. Originally, it was also a cultural and social event where groups of women (often accompanied by their children) and men gathered separately to relax.

Within our Sensorial Spa, we view the hammam not as a standalone treatment, but as a ritual in which you unwind step by step.

Our location features a small, luxurious hammam area. It is a moment to slow down step by step and reconnect with your body. Wearing swimwear is not mandatory, but please ensure you do not cover your body too much, as your skin is important for warming up and cooling down.

The origin of the hammam

The hammam traces its origins to ancient bathing cultures in the Middle East and the Ottoman Empire. There, heat and water had been used for centuries to cleanse and soothe the body. This tradition originated in part from Roman bathhouses, where bathing was an important part of daily life. It was not only about caring for the body, but also a moment of rest, socializing, and stepping away from the hustle and bustle.

What does a hammam do to the body?

A hammam treatment is not only cleansing but also supports relaxation, skin improvement, and body recovery. Heat and steam penetrate deeply. You often quickly feel your muscles soften and your breathing become calmer. Tension that was stuck begins to release slowly. Blood circulation improves, and the body is given the space to unwind. Many people experience a feeling of lightness and peace afterwards.

The effect on the skin and senses

The hammam also does a lot for the skin. The heat and the scrub with the 'kese' scrub glove gently remove dead skin cells. The skin's blood circulation improves and feels smoother, softer, and more vibrant afterwards. But what is often less visible is what happens deeper within the skin.

During the ritual, the senses and the sensory nerves addressed personally.
Through warmth, touch, and rhythm, a deeply calming effect is created on the nervous system. Your body feels safe again, as it were, to let go. And it is precisely there that true relaxation arises.

Water and heat in Ayurveda

Within Ayurveda, too, the healing powers of heat and water have been acknowledged for thousands of years. Heat helps to open and soften. Water cleanses and supports the release of what has built up. In combination with touch, deep relaxation occurs, allowing body and mind to find peace again. The hammam aligns perfectly with this.

How we design the hammam

At the Sensorial Spa, we work on a small scale and with attention. No crowds, no shared spaces, but a quiet place where you can safely retreat. We build up the ritual gradually, starting with a warm foot bath to allow the body to settle. This is followed by a gentle scrub to cleanse the skin. Next comes the moment of the warm foam ritual which we create in a special way from natural olive oil soap using the authentic 'pestemal' foam bag. The body is enveloped in soft foam, and the touch becomes calmer and more fluid. In between, warm water is generously poured over your body. Afterwards, we take the time to allow the body to relax again. Everything happens at a calm pace, attuned to what is needed at that moment.

The foam ritual

For many people, this is the most special moment. The warm foam feels soft and enveloping, almost like a blanket. It brings a sense of security and deep relaxation. Here, you often notice that you can truly let go.

Small-scale and personal

With us, the hammam is experienced in complete tranquility, alone or with a maximum of one other person. This makes it personal and ensures that the attention remains fully focused on you. For us, the power of the hammam lies not only in the warmth or the cleansing, but also in the attention. In slowing down. In the moment when you don't have to do anything. And in which your body is allowed to feel again what relaxation is truly meant to be.

Within our Sensorial Spa, we work with Ayurvedic principles and combine the hammam with other rituals, tailored to the season and your needs.

After a hammam ritual, the body often feels different: softer, lighter, and more relaxed. As if tension is slowly sliding away and space is created again. Not only in the body, but also in the mind. It is an experience that you not only feel at that moment, but that continues to work long afterward: a sense of peace, clarity, and being reborn.
